Military & Naval
Cambridge University Library’s magnificent collections of
military and naval papers are heavily consulted by those with an
interest in the history and traditions of the British and Commonwealth
armed services. Drawing upon constant support from the Friends,
the Library has developed its collection of ships’ logs from
a small if valuable nucleus among the papers of the Acton family
into a wonderful resource, offering new perspectives on life in
the nineteenth and early twentieth-century Royal Navy at peace and
war. Thanks both to timely donations and generous financial backing,
the Library has also been able to secure copies of several important
and influential manuals governing the art of war in early-modern
Europe. Other military items and collections purchased with help
from the Friends shed light on the early careers of well-known authors,
and illustrate the lot of ordinary soldiers in the Great War.
