Claude-Joseph-Désiré Charnay was born in Fleurieux, Rhône in 1828. He was a keen traveller and mainly used photography to further his archaeological researches. He travelled to the USA in 1857 and spent two years in Mexico. He returned to Europe in 1861. However, in 1863 he went to Madagascar and in 1864 to 1880 visited South America, Java, Australia and Canada. In 1880 he returned to Mexico (Turner 1996, p.489). | |||
