George S. Da Costa was born in Lagos in 1853. He was educated at Lagos C.M.S. Training Institute. From 1877 to 1895 he was the manager of the C.M.S. Bookshop in Lagos. He opened a photographic business in Lagos in 1895. Da Costa photographed railway construction to Jebba and Kaduna for the Government. In 1920 his studio was at Oke Popo, 18 Ricca Street, Lagos (Macmillan 1920, p.116).
