George Fiske was born in 1835. He was the first photographer to be a year-round resident of Yosemite. In 1904 a fire destroyed his house and studio leading to the loss of three-quarters of his negatives, his cameras, his lenses and a large part of his stock of prints. Fiske died in 1918. In 1943 the remainder of Fiske's negatives were destroyed in another fire (American Photography Museum 1999).
