William Ellerton Fry arrived in South Africa in 1872. He was variously a farmer, trader and prospector. From 1872-1890 he was the Secretary and Computer at the Royal Observatory, Cape Town. He rose in position to Assistant Astronomer Royal. In 1890 he was official photographer, assistant to Selous, intelligence officer and meteorologist in Mashonaland Pioneer Column. He later worked on the Salisbury-Tete telegraph and travelled in Australia and New Zealand.
