John Harrold was a Sergeant in the 10th Company, Royal Engineers. During the Abyssinian Campaigns 1867-68, Harrold was in charge of the Royal Engineers photographic section. 15200 photographic prints of plans and maps were produced during the advance on Magdala. Landscapes and portraits were also taken during the campaign. From March 1873 to May 1898 Harrold was employed as a photographer in the Surveyor General's Office, Survey of India, Calcutta. He assisted James Waterhouse with a series of 100 photographs of the transit of Venus, taken from Roorkee 1874.
