W. Hermann was a commercial photographer in Cape Town. Possibly 'W. Hermann' is Wilhelm Hermann who was born in 1841 in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Wilhelm Hermann trained as an artist. He arrived in Cape Town circa 1869. Circa 1871-72 he returned briefly to Germany, but he returned to the Cape in 1875. He married Chrissie de Villiers and eventually had three daughters. Struggling to make a living as an artist, he turned to photography (W. de L. 1963, pp.188-192). Hermann had a studio at 2 Roeland Street 1880-84 and opposite Government House at Stalplein 1888-94 (Bensusan 1963, p.237). Hermann died in 1916 (W. de L. 1963, p.189). | |||
