John Roberts Hogg was born in London, England, in 1838. He was the son of Dr. John Hogg. He was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1857. He was made Captain in July 1872, Major in October 1877 and Lieutenant Colonel in July 1883. He was made Colonel in July 1887 and retired in November 1895. Hogg served in Corfu from December 1860 until July 1864. During the latter part of this service he was engaged in demolishing fortifications in connection with the transfer of the Ionian Islands to Greece. He was stationed at Chatham and Devonport circa 1864-1870; Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) circa 1870 to circa 1874; possibly St. Helena 1874-1878, Chatham 1878-1883, Portsmouth as the Sub-District C.R.E. (Commander Royal Engineers) 1883-1888. He was placed on half-pay in 1888 and employed by Sir John Pender to investigate proposed railway lines in Texas and Mexico. He was appointed Colonel on the Staff and C.R.E. in Malta 1889-1894 and was engaged in fortification work which was in progress under the Imperial Defence Act. Hogg was a successful amateur photographer. He photographed excavated antiquities at Anuradhapura in 1874. Hogg married late in life. He died at Ealing on 27th November 1908 (A.T.S. 1909, p.375-376). |
