F.R.C. Lutterodt was born in 1871 in Accra, Gold Coast (now Ghana). He was a messenger with the Audit Department in 1888. He opened a photographic studio in Accra in 1889. He worked in Victoria (Cameroons), French Gabon (now Gabon), Fernando Po (now Bioko), San Thome and Prince's Island. He returned to Accra in 1900. He was appointed photographer to accompany the Governor on a visit to Togoland (now Togo) in 1919 and also on a visit to the Western Province, Ashanti, Northern Territories and the Eastern Province in 1920. He had a studio in William Street, Usshertown in 1920 (Macmillan 1920, p.211).
