A. W. Andree senior was the nephew of C. A. Lorenz. He was in Government Service from 1858-65. From 1861 to 1865 he was a Signaller with the Telegraph Dept., Galle. He left to establish a photographic business. He had studios at: 32 Pedlar Street, Colombo, circa 1866-72; Prince's Gate, Colombo, circa 1874; 42 Cross Street, Pettah, Colombo, circa 1876-1878; Dam Street, Small Pass, Colombo, circa 1880 onwards. A.W. Andree junior joined (his father's ?) ferrotype studio in Chatham Street, Colombo in 1887. He then set up a studio at his residence in Norris Road (while also working for the Colombo branch of the Bank of India). He married in 1893 and opened the Hopetoun Studio, Slave Island, with his brother Bertie as assistant. The firm won medals and diplomas at the Paris Exhibition in 1900 and the World's Fair in 1904. Bertie worked for Platé and Co in 1919. |
