Alfred Wallace Paul was born on the 26th May 1847. He was educated at Clifton and Wadham College, Oxford. He was appointed to the Indian Civil Service after the examination of 1868. He arrived in India in November 1870. He served in Bengal as: Assistant Magistrate and Collector; Joint Magistrate and Inspector General of Registration; Political Officer, Macaulay Mission to Tibet 1884; Deputy Commissioner August 1887; on special duty to Tibet frontier April 1890; British Commr. for Anglo-Chinese Border Convention February 1891; Magistrate and Collector May 1891; on special duty to Darjeeling March 1892.

Paul took photographs during the Macaulay Mission of 1884. He retired in 1895 and died on the 9th August 1912 (Who was who 1988, p.404).
