| José Anjo was of Portuguese origin. For many years he was the Portuguese Consul in Antigua. In 1897 Anjo was advertising postcards in the 'Antigua Standard'. At this point he was based in the High Street, St Johns, Antigua. In 1899 he photographed hurricane damage in the Leeward Islands for the acting Governor. In 1899, 1900 and 1901 he made photographic visits to Dominica. In 1903 he was appointed agent for Rochester Optical and Camera Company. In 1905 his premises and 15 years worth of negatives were destroyed in a fire at 31 High Street. He continued trading from Anthony Anjo's 'The People's Grocery'. He was possibly bankrupt by 1907 as there was a public auction of his assets. However, he had resumed photographic work by 1913. Anjo died in 1950. | |||
