John William Rowland was born on the 30th December 1852, son of Colonel John Christian Rowland. He was educated at Edinburgh University. Rowland served in India 1877-78. In 1880 he was an Assistant Colonial Surgeon in the Gold Coast (now Ghana). However, he transferred to Lagos in October 1880. From September 1887 to his retirement in 1897 he was a Colonial Surgeon in Lagos. In 1893 he accompanied Sir Gilbert Carter as a botanist on the Lagos Interior Expedition. Rowland was an amateur photographer. In 1885 he compiled an album of Lagos views. |
