Samuel Baylis Barnard was born in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England, on June 10th 1841. He came from a family clothiers whose wealth was diminished by the industrial revolution. Barnard arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1864. He originally set up as an artist but turned to photography. He opened a studio at 37 Adderley Street in May 1865. He married Kate Stroughton Vardy in May 1873. He eventually had three daughters. His youngest daughter, Marion Amberley Barnard became a portrait photographer (de Kock 1972, p.21). Barnard's studio was destroyed by fire but re-opened in the 1870s (Bull and Denfield 1970, p.187). Through the 1870s his studio at Adderley Chambers was advertised in the 'Cape of Good Hope Almanacs'.
