James Bragge was born in South Shields, England, in 1833. He married at the age of 21 and probably practised photography. He arrived in New Zealand in 1865 and opened a studio in Manners Street, Wellington, advertising as the New Zealand Academy of Photographic Art. From circa 1879 to circa 1890 he had a studio in Lambton Quay. In 1880 he was commissioned by Wellington City Council to take photographs of the city for the Melbourne International Exhibition (Knight 1971, p.68).
