Sir Everard Ferdinand Im Thurn was born in 1852. He was educated at Marlborough and attended Oxford University, Edinburgh University and Sydney University.
He was the curator of the British Guiana Museum from 1877 to 1882. In 1882 he became a Stipendiary Magistrate, Pomeroon. He worked as a government agent in the North West District, British Guiana (now Guyana), from 1891 to 1899. Im Thurn was employed on the Venezuelan Boundary Commission 1897-99. In 1899 he was a 1st Class Clerk in the Colonial Office and, from 1901, Principal Clerk. In 1901 he was made Lieutenant-Governor and Colonial Secretary, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). In 1904 he became Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner, Western Pacific. He retired in 1910.

Im Thurn married Hannah C., daughter of Professor Lorimer, in 1895. He was a keen amateur photographer. His particular interest was anthropological and ethnological subjects. He was also President of the Royal Anthropological Institute 1919-20 and an Honorary Fellow of Exeter College 1925.

Im Thurn died on 9th October 1932 ('Who was who' 1967, p.690).
