caption: 'Sweat-wig' worn by men; the wig consists of a 'circlet made of the long hair from a bear's neck and shoulders plucked out by the roots and bound onto a cane so as to bristle out thickly in all directions, except where the circlet fits on to the head. At the back the 2 ends of the cane are joined with string and the whole junction lapped with cotton wool'(J.H. Hutton).
