caption: Headdress with feather ornament. "A headdress of hornbill feathers giving a tally of the liaisons of the owner, and formally assumed by him at the Hga-Ngi genna. Worn only then by the owner, who must swear to the accuracy of the tally, it is then left in his dekachang for the young men to wear. The larger tail-feather is that worn in full dress by all young men, but not by virgin boys. The wing feathers give the number of liaisons consummated. This particular specimen was made by my Zemi at a training camp in the plains, to the identical pattern used in Asalu, and as far as I know in all Zemi villages" (collector).
