caption: Small monochord fiddle, made of a small coconut shell covered tightly with a membrane tied at the apex. Stem is of wood carved into a roll at the end with a raised rectangular tuning-peg plate below it and below that a flat semicircular plate. The cord, of a bunch of horse-hairs, is tied to a cord passing through the peghole over the plate and round the stem, and has a sliding stick to modulate the tone. There is a small wooden bridge. The bow is of cane with horse hair. Instrument possibly shows Assamese influence. Asalu is near the railway. Zemi, Asalu village.
