Very long up-curving dance-tail made of narrow length of wood of oblong section, with 2 carved faces at the end and one at the top above a strut lying against the woman's back, facing outwards, with eyes of black seeds with white "sutures" and teeth of coix seeds and cotton earpads and red hair. Below the two heads is a rectangular plate decorated with red and black hair and lines of coix seeds. The top of the tail under the single head is plated with rows of coix seeds. The top (back) of the tail is decorated with a row of 2cm cowries base uppermost on red dyed hair plumes with long black streamers below. the tail was made for Mr Mills. No complete old tail of this type exists. There is no doubt of its correctness. Worn by a man who has taken heads and covered a retreat. Eastern Angami, Pfutsero village. |
