The dress is worn at the great harvest festival. Before the Naga tribes came under British rule, each feather worn denoted an enemy's head taken in raids on villages of other clans. The ear ornaments and the 'sporran' are made of goat's hair dyed scarlet, the sporran being also elaborately trimmed with beetle wings and cowries. The armlets are of ivory, the neck ornaments are shells and boar-tusks. The instrument made of wood held in the hand, is that with which the rice is beaten during the festival, to the drone of monotonous chanting. |
