Semicircular stone platform (asuthe) erected on the path from the village to the fields from whence the spirit of the dead man will watch and bless the crops: a tiny house on very high piles with a bin in front of it containing every sort of edible grain is set up for the use of the dead: at the back of the platform stands a small menhir which indicates that the deceased has performed the series of Feasts of Merit: over the tiny house is a wooden frame hung with gourds, each of which represents the human skulls and animal trophies hunted and sacrificed during his lifetime: the reeds planted in front commemorate his love affairs. Eastern Rengma, Meluri village. |
