| caption: | mithan head carvings on house fronts |
| text: | Beyond the gate the village paths wind through a maze of houses. Many of these have carvings on their frontal planks and in almost every case the carving is of a mithan's head. I was told that the number of such carvings tallies with the number of mithans actually killed at a genna and that the house-holder himself does the carving. the carving is of a standard type and the general effect is of a row of badges. In many houses the skulls of cattle slaughtered at the genna are hung up in a grisly line above the door. |
