Shortly beyond this spot, I saw the first village gate. Each of the four Khels possess one and although all are old, none is entirely derelict. The Khel system is fairly coherant and although there is overlapping, each Khel possesses a fairly definate boundary. Near the southern gate I noticed four long vats for making rice-beer. Each was a hollowed tree trunk and was as long as the dug-out canoes in vogue in Chota Nagpur or the great log-drums which occur further to the north. Two of these log vats were lying in the open while the others were carefully protected by long low sheds. I was told that they were Khel property and could be used whenever rice-beer was required at the feast of merit. |
