The owner of the house had secured a head on one of the earlier expeditions and I was shown the dark blue cloth with painted band which he is now entitled to wear. The design consists of a long series of geometric figures all representing warriors' heads with at the end a symbol for a head dress. The design is painted in black on a white background. |

As pointed out by Mills, the art of painting these bands was formerly practised in Tseminyu but it has now been dead for more than twenty years. The art (40) however still exists in Tesophenyu and there are two households which practise it. One of them has painted on an average one cloth a year for the last twenty years and the design includes tigers' eyes, warriors' tails and heads and enemies heads (sic). The price for one cloth is 40 rupees. |
