As Mills has stressed in his book there is a marked difference in custom between the northern village of Tesophenyu and the southern one of Tseminyu and one has only to enter the village to be struck for example by its greater freedom in the use of clothes. Almost all the girls and women wear nothing above the waist except their ornaments and it is only when they notice a stranger walking in the village that they hurriedly pulled a cloth round their shoulders. |

Unlike Tseminyu, where carving seems confined to public buildings such as the Khel morungs and the village school and to a single warrior's memorial, carved pillars in Tesophenyu are installed in all private houses whose owners have completed the full series of gennas. This series includes the head-taking ceremony and I was surprised to note the comparatively large number of houses which contained them. |
