There is a magnificent new morung standing on the crest. Lotha morungs differ from Angami and Rengma ones in being extremely long and slim buildings. About a third of the length consists of a long porch containing a number of carved posts. The carving is very solid, huge and massive and some of the pillars are the solid trunks of large trees cut away to expose the carved forms. A common device is to carve a mithans' head with the horns as it were embracing the trunk. The main pillar contains two enormous horn-bills, while the front side posts have each a small mithan head and a woman's breast. The long porch is open on all sides and must be very cold and windy. The morung proper has sides of split bamboo with sleeping platforms for the members. The roof ends with a slender carved beak and is adorned with two red eyes. |
