At the end of the village is a new morung and by the side of it is the log drum. The morung itself has been newly repaired 'but no one sleeps in it as all the young boys have turned christian'. There is something inexpressibly pathetic in the older members of the morung still going on repairing their building while their children turn to the new faith. What is even sadder is the apparent (64) inability of fathers to stop their sons from forsaking the old beliefs. Beside the log drum is an old village gate but without any carvings. |

Since the village is now very largely christian, the place of the morung has been taken by a christian hostel. It is the first hostel I have seen which both looks like a morung and can compare with one in general magnificence. The roof is decorated with straw tassels. Three puppets dangle from the porch, while a wooden hornbill is poised, as if in flight, at the juncture of the three supporting poles. |
