text: February 14 To Charali. At Lakhuni the gaonbura complained of wild elephants. 'Only three days ago there were four in the fields. Our women do not go to work from fear. In the rains when the paddy is ripening they come in herds of thirty. They eat the whole crop'.
text: The elephants are certainly about for on the way down to Charali the path was littered with their droppings. The warm thick jungle which skirts the foothills harbours other animals as well for as we went along we heard deer crashing through the under-growth and once a drove of monkeys ran howling through the trees.
