The work was supervised by the gaonbura. About 50 men shared in the cutting and the whole work took a fortnight. When the gate had been shaped Ihulievi Angami dipped his finger in some black paint procured from the Deputy Commissioner and traced the outlines. He used the old gate as a copy. He had never drawn before but had watched others do it. The red is like red lead and is got from some reddish grit at Khonoma. Black was formerly made by burning bamboo leaves - white is from some white earth which is common in the hills. Made 2 gates at same time - the two and the ceremonies cost about Rs. 1000 - 16 cattle 2 pigs (cows and bullocks Rs 80 each now). The old gate was 40 years old - both were broken and decayed. Vitsosa Angami did the drawing - he did the suns by tracing round a circular piece of wood - He used the former gate as a model but changed it slightly. He gave 4 heads as against 5 and did the suns with corrugated rims instead of simple circles. SKETCH |
