text: The crucial importance of the gate is shown in yet another circumstance. If the gate seems to be safeguarding Khel welfare, a ceremonial visit to a friendly Khel can be profitably undertaken. But if the gate is running amok, it is futile to undertake it for no good will redound on either Khel. In 1946 the Tsotonoma Khel of Kohima were invited to visit a Khel in Jotsoma. The Khel elders said 'There is something wrong with our gate, let us first bring a new one, then we will visit you'. So the invitation was declined.
