In attacking a village, an advance party of young warriors is sent ahead while a small party of older warriors wait to safeguard their retreat. When the attacking band has fulfilled its mission, they come rushing back - past the rearguard - who then set panjis and if necessary beat back the pursuers. The rearguard then follows. When the whole party gets back and if it has got a head, the feast is held in the house of the oldest man in the rearguard. 'He was the bravest for he stayed behind'. The animals are provided by those who did the killing, but the cooking of the meat, the gathering etc. takes place in the oldest rearguard house. The latter gets a pig's head, a foreleg and the heart. |
