Head-taking - heads taken to the drum house - kept there one night - all the men sleep with it - then on the head tree - left there permanently - (skulls still on the Kuturr head trees ) - not placed in drum house or in warrior's house - tallies at houses - a leader has often 4 strings of basket balls - the first a tally of the corpses he himself has speared the others a tally of enemies speared by his associates (his gang) - in some houses skulls of pigs attached to the balls (the pigs killed in celebration of the raids) - in the drum houses strings of basket balls - or basket rings - each string a tally of one warrior - the drums the usual Yimchungr type - a long beak in the front but closed at both ends - the drum houses hardly any carvings - cf. Changs - ie. the drum house is not a skull-house. [The basket balls are a tally both of enemies and of enemy mithan speared by the warrior]. The leader does puja before a raid on behalf of his gang. |
