NNC meeting in Kohima, February 1947, agree to demand a ten year interim government |

It was now that Angami dissatisfaction with the Wokha decision came to a head and when the N.N.C. met at Kohima in February 1947 to decide it policy vis-a-vis the committee, differences of opinion became even more acute. With a view to appeasing the Aos, the Angamis suggested that in place of a finally independent Naga government, they should have a ten years' interim government under the protection of H.M.G. or the Indian Union. Even this demand however did not please the Mokokchung members and a furious debate ensued - the Aos demanding autonomy within Assam and standing by the Wokha decision while the Angamis insisted on the new demand. The next morning there was still a deadlock and it was only after the Deputy Commissioner had impressed on Mayang and Kevichusa the need for unity that the Aos yielded and the Angami view prevailed. A memorandum was then drawn up on these lines and sent to both British and Indian Governments. |
