A week after the Governor's visit, the Delhi Committee met in Shillong and Aliba Imti again attended it. No one here in Mokokchung quite understands what happened for when the Naga case came up, the Governor's agreement was merely brushed aside. 'We find the recommendations made by us cover in essence the measure of autonomy contemplated by the Nagas and go much further in some respects', the Committee said. Aliba Imti pointed out that the Committee was apparently not accepting the agreement 'and that it was treating the Naga Hills district as part of Assam and not as an independent area.' But this objection was overruled and he was told that the N.N.C. might send a delegation to Delhi for further discussion if it liked. |

This summary dismissal of the Governor's agreement seems to have rudely shocked the Nagas. Those who never liked the agreement now feel themselves no longer pledged to it, while those who were satisfied are at a loss to understand the position. Meanwhile with every day Indian independence draws nearer, and in five days time the N.N.C. is meeting here at Mokokchung to decide its final steps. |
