He was unfortunately killed as a result of a stupid feud between the Lhota villages of Lakhuti and Pangti. The village of Lakhuti, which wanted to work off old scores against Pangti, persuaded the latter village to ambush and kill Butler (56) and his party, with the promise that they would attack from the rear. They had no intention of doing so, but knew that if Butler was killed, Government would take reprisals on Pangti. |

It is interesting to see how little the essential problems have changed since Butler's time. Like Pawsey today, Butler plodded over the hills, opening bridle paths, ironing out feuds and doing all he could to help the Nagas. Butler was working in the area which today is peaceful and where the Nagas have given up head-hunting for politics. Today the same needs exist, but they have shifted to the 'control' and 'tribal' areas thirty miles deeper in the hills. |
