'Good ears' also characterise Naga singing. After lunch I listened to choral practice in the school hall. The boys and girls were sitting in four groups - bass, tenor, contralto and soprano. All the tunes were American evangelical hymns and the children passed the music from one to another, slickly reading the four parts from sight. As they sang, the missionary conducted from the platform sauntering up and down and making humorous comments. 'Walk up Calvary way. Go to it, girls.' he said. 'There's a new name written up in glory, And it's mine, Pom Pom, Oh yes, it's mine. Come on boys, let's have it.' It might almost have been music-hall. |
