Many of these Angami villages are impressively situated. Founded in the days of headhunting, a site was chosen which could easily be defended. At Kekrima, Pfutsero and Chizami every path to the village passes for about a hundred yards between high crags oozing with water. On top of these are fences, shrubs and bamboos which arch over the path to form a long dark tunnel. They bear the most grotesque resemblance to Bull Banks in 'The Tale of Mr Tod.' As I clambered over the slippery boulders it was easy to visualise the difficulties of an attacking party - the more so if the path was lined with hidden warriors and sharpened bamboo stakes lurked in the dim light. |
