slight effects of Indian Independence in the Naga Hills |
text: |
As we sit in Mokokchung, it is as if Indian independence were still 'impossible, ahead.' The more intelligent Nagas (98) are full of anxious fears. 'We think of it day and night,' said one of them. Anything, they feel, may happen any day. But outwardly nothing has altered. There are still no signs of plainsmen. The Government, they know, is Assamese in theory, for the Naga Hills are now administered by the Ministry. But in Mokokchung itself rule is still British, law and order are the same. Villagers still ask whether anything has happened. Apart from mutterings across the frontier, peace is everywhere. |
