Another day we went to Mayang Nokcha's house. He lives in an airy Ao house down by the Middle English School, with a fine open expanse of hills all around. There is quite a colony of teachers here with flourishing gardens and families. Mayang's wife showed me her Rhode Island chickens, all bred from a pair given her by the late S.D.O. She is now sending pairs out into the villages. We are always forgetting that besides being one of the most intelligent Nagas, Mayang is also a pillar of the Baptist Church. We were reminded of it by two enormous coloured texts decorating his wall. Mayang's wife had recently had a baby and as it lay smiling with its toothless mouth, its skin was almost as fair as an English child's. |
