This evening Subong Ao, the overseer, who is just back from aligning a new road, came in to discuss the N.N.C. meeting. He complained of the heavy rain which has been keeping us indoors and which had soaked him as he worked in the jungle. 'If I had been a seed,' he said in his naive way, 'I would have germinated.' |

He thinks that at the meeting on 22 October the Aos, Changs and Sangtams will all approve of the draft constitution and will be prepared to go ahead with the Governor's 'agreement'. 'What else can we do?' he said. 'We must either take that or get nothing.' When we said that it was proposed to let his own branch, the Civil Works Department, remain under the Assam Government, he said, 'That is very good. Education is more important.' |
