Mayang also enquired about this Lushai officer, Captain Sailo, and the rumour that he is to be the next D.C. 'I have heard about him and seen his photo,' said Mayang. 'A nice young man I believe. But D.C! How can he possibly take charge of a district like this with no experience. A man used not to be considered fit to be D.C. of the Naga Hills until he had been S.D.O. there for at least five years. He does not know what administration is. None of the Nagas will listen to him. Of course he will be better than a plainsman, but the Nagas are in for a difficult time and it will be even more difficult for (125) him. We know what Lushai administration is like and I don't think a Lushai will suit us. Why cannot Kevichusa be D.C?' Mayang added. Bill explained that since Kevichusa had joined the Independence party, the Assam Ministry would not trust him and would always be thinking if he were D.C. that he was planning an independent Naga Hills. 'They are more likely to transfer him,' said Bill. 'I think he will resign,' said Mayang, 'and become a farmer.' |
