The Sangtam women looked most attractive with their smooth hair held by shining grass fillets. Many of them were wearing cloth puttees which they said protected their legs from thorns when they work in the fields. They wear a distinctive dress - a heavy red and black striped and patterned skirt and a red and black cloth, the ends of which are knotted across the chest to form a kind of double shoulder cape. The tiny girls have their hair shaved except for three tufts on the back, front and centre of the head which makes them look like Japanese dolls. The men were gay in red cloths patterned in black, white or blue. |
