As we emerged from the woods, we saw Tuensang sprawling over the hills below, a huge village. In a field I could see its twelve headmen, great toughs with cane helmets, waiting by the path to lead us to the camp. |

I had not expected such a brilliant spectacle. The camp, a group of grass huts was surrounded by a bamboo palisade to keep back the huge crowd. Here there were villagers from not only the 'control area', but also the 'tribal area' - wild Konyaks with brass heads on their chests, Kalyo Kengyus with tusked helmets and Changs in their scarlet and blue cloths, a magnificent crowd. |
