This evening the Gurkha subahdar came into our hut for a drink and the talk gradually came round to politics. The Gurkha attitude seems very similar to that of the Nagas. They have little liking or respect for the Indians. The British Commandant of this battalion is leaving next month; 'We shall just have to see what happens,' said the subahdar. 'If we are given a Sikh we shall all go.' Both Nagas and Gurkhas have mixed well on this expedition. None of these Gurkhas are Brahmins and they eat pork or mithan with the Nagas and gratefully accept rice-beer on the march. (146) |
