The villagers of Cheshorr have built us an excellent camp. Our hut must be about sixty feet long with great wooden posts supporting the roof. It is going to be used as the new village school after we vacate it. The only drawback is that dozens of harvestman spiders keep dropping on to us from the thatch. As the roof is so lofty we have had a large wood fire tonight and all the interpreters have crowded in sitting on our boxes and on faggots. They are drinking rum, smoking and reminiscing. It is a cheerful sight with the flaming fire and the figures huddled in their red cloaks. The open door frames a black velvet sky and a slip of moon. Aohukyu tells us they have prepared a great treat for our dinner tonight - stewed dog. |
