Thenizumi is as the summit of a mountain, or rather at the end of a mountain shoulder. For that reason every house stands on a different level and while taking the census of the village one has to climb continuously from one terrace to the other over stone steps and along slippery paths. The differences in height between the terraces sometimes are no more than one metre, at others they are so big that from one terrace one looks down on the roofs of the houses standing below. At the ridge of the terraces, one often finds platforms on poles which are slightly raised towards the edge and which are used as seats mainly by the young men, but also by women and old men.
