Dinner with Captain B.C.H. Gerty, First Royal Bn. 9th Jat Regiment, with Fuze and Mills. Afterwards there was a performance and display of the Assam Rifles. (64) In a large hall open on all sides, soldiers performed different national dances, partly in costumes with some dressed up as women, others in their khaki shorts. Most remarkable were the dances of the Assamese from the plains, a Kuki dance and a dance of the Gurkhali. All dances were accompanied by choral singing and percussion and especially drums. The rhythmic assurance of the dances were astonishing. |
