menhirs and graves with figures |
text: |
We climbed on through huge boulders and came to a part of the village where the houses are built directly amidst the rocks. A bridge leads from the morung to its offshoot, this built only three years ago "so that the number of boys and men may increase". From this new morung one has an expansive view far into the plains. (81) Two menhirs stand at the exit of the village although nobody knows when or why they were put up. Still further down, small figures of the dead stand at the base of bamboo poles which carry the utensils of the deceased. The figures, 'poke', are made of split bamboo and are most primitive. The head is indicated only by the ornaments hanging from it (film 16 no. 6-8) |
