For other illnesses the sacrifices are to Ga-shi, the earth deity. Some believe that Ga-shi made the earth. Ga-shi certainly inhabits the earth. I am not sure whether this deity is male or female. The Ang of Tamlu said that she is female and identical with the goddess called Ni-ha-kha-gang. Ga-shi is considered evil because he or she catches the peoples souls, 'la-ang-ha', and thus causes their illnesses. To placate him or her sacrifices are made in the fields. First a chicken, then a pig and chicken, third a dog and chicken and finally if all of this has not worked, a goat and chicken. The following words are recited. "You have captured the man, let him go, ever here we have cleared the jungle and made our fields, why have you captured him, let him go". |
